Phil Smith, Director
With special expertise in business transformation, Phil is our Chief Executive Officer and owner. He brings with him 20 years of global experience across wealth management, asset management, brokerage, insurance and consulting. Before joining us in 2013, Phil was Managing Director and Global Management Committee member at Barclays Wealth, where he played a major role in the inception and development of the global infrastructure of this business line for Barclays Plc. His previous roles include that of Global Chief Financial Officer of Fortis Investments. Phil previously held director-level roles at Arthur Andersen, Prudential M&G and Prudential Corporation Asia. During this time, he built up extensive experience of M&A, joint venture partnerships and greenfield business development across Asia, EMEA and the Americas.
Bob Adams, Director
Bob is a very experienced infrastructure specialist who has delivered and managed large-scale technology and operations environments globally. Over his 25-year career, Bob has worked across the asset management and banking sectors. He has particular expertise in the deployment of complex front-to-back technology solutions within complex international environments. Before joining us in 2013, Bob was Managing Director & Global Chief Information Officer at UBS Global Asset Management. His previous roles include that of Global Chief Information Officer at BNP Paribas Investment Partners (formerly Fortis Investments). His early career was spent in technology with Fidelity Investments, NatWest and Westlandersbank.
Vincent Cambonie, Director
Vincent’s career spans 25 years of working in global financial institutions, most recently as Managing Director and Group Chief Financial Officer at BNP Paribas Investment Partners. During his career, Vincent has gained valuable skills in performance management and business strategy including various M&A activities.
David Etherington, Director
David’s distinguished career in global blue-chip financial services companies spans technology, risk, governance and intermediary distribution. In his last executive role as Chief Growth Officer for Zurich Financial Services, he was a board director of multiple companies including Zurich Intermediary Group, Openwork, Zurich Corporate Pensions and Technical Connection Ltd. During this time, he was central to the growth and continued success of those businesses, driving through the group’s Global Corporate Savings Platform (Money4Life) and Global Retail Platform. David has also held board-level roles at NatWest, CLS Bank and UnumProvident, as well as a range of non-executive and advisory positions at high-profile UK businesses. He chairs our Risk Committee.
Executive management team
Paul Downing, Managing Director
Paul has extensive operational experience within financial services having held senior positions in pension administration, wealth management, stockbroking, and asset management. He also has experience in regulatory consultancy where he specialised in operational issues and undertook a number of skilled person reviews for the FSA. He brings a wealth of relevant experience to Hornbuckle having led platform operations at both Novia and Skandia where he led the operational integration with Selestia.
Jo French, Managing Director, Adviser Sales & Service
Jo brings with her a wealth of operational, technical and client service expertise in the UK pensions space. She joined us from Pointon York SIPP Solutions Limited, part of the Pointon York Group, where she successfully led a fundamental re-build of the business. Prior to this, Jo held various senior positions at NFU Mutual working across the areas of technology, operations and change.
Thomas Kelly, Head of SSAS & Operations Transition
Thomas joined Hornbuckle in 2014 and has held a number of senior management positions in the operations area. He is currently responsible for leading the SSAS Team alongside a wider role involving operational transition. Thomas has worked in Financial Services for over 25 years, he started his career with Lloyds Bank and held a number of roles including lending and financial advice. In 2002 Thomas moved to a technical role with Newell Palmer – a leading Independent Financial Adviser firm – where he developed his knowledge of the pensions market. Thomas has 15 years experience working in the self-administered pension market across both SSAS and SIPP.
Sharon Mitchell, Head of SIPP Operations
Sharon is our Head of SIPP Operations. She has almost 30 years’ experience in the financial service industry, and has held senior operational and client management roles across a number of third party administrators, and employee benefit consultancies. Most recently, Sharon was UK Operations Director with JLT EB, and she was a previous Partner with Mercer. Sharon specialises in operating model design, outsourcing and offshoring. She is passionate about delivering excellent customer service.
Matt Jones, Head of Financial Control
Matt has responsibility for the finance function who are in control of the day to day transactional monitoring, forecasting and corporate reporting. This includes the monthly Board reports and quarterly regulatory returns. Matt joined Hornbuckle in October 2014 and has worked in financial services from the last 15 years. Matt started his career at PwC in Nottingham and since his ACA qualification has held senior finance roles with Cattles Plc, Apex Credit Management, Cabot Credit Management and the Motor Insurer’s Bureau.
Lindsay Ballantyne, Head of Risk and Compliance
Lindsay joined the company in August 2016 after a varied career spanning almost three decades. His extensive knowledge and experience of regulatory matters form the basis of a multi-disciplined role, ensuring compliance with FCA rules and principles with a focus on customer outcomes. Working with all areas of the business, he ensures an understanding of the regulator’s expectations and helps to implement and maintain appropriate systems and controls. From a risk management perspective, Lindsay is responsible for maintaining and managing the Risk Management Framework across Hornbuckle, helping the business highlight and mitigate operational and conduct risks.
Prior to joining Hornbuckle, Lindsay worked for KPMG as a Risk Consultant. He previously spent six years with the Financial Conduct Authority working in firm supervision, and a further 20 years in outsourced manufacturing including senior positions in Operations and Commercial roles.
